2004 Chance to Dance School Coordinator of the Year
Pat Maymon, physical education teacher, was selected as a coordinator of the year for the Chance to Dance program. Pat started as coordinator 17 years ago and with a brief hiatus of 2 years she has 15 years of service at Camden Street School, currently Harry Kizarian School. Pat was ill for the Thursday night performance and unable to accept her award in person but was very pleased to have received this recognition.
Also selected at the Wednesday performance was Denise Hefner of Curvin McCabe School in Pawtucket. Denise is the physical education teacher at the school and served in this position as Chance to Dance coordinator for 16 years. She was called to the stage to accept the award and flowers. She was totally surprised and smiled for the rest of the evening.
Last year the staff of Chance to Dance decided to give awards for long-term, outstanding service to the program. We have just completed 18 years of providing quality dance education to the children of Rhode Island. To learn more about the program and how it can be part of your school call 885-6073 or 437-9562. We have space for three schools for the 2004-2005 school year.

Chance to Dance 2003
Chance To Dance performers danced their hearts out this year at the Chance To Dance performance at the Providence Performing Arts Center. Performances took place on Tuesday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m.
Students from many schools throughout the state took part in this event which was a culmination of learning that has taken place during the year. Each class learns dance concepts, moves, etc., then dances are choreographed with the specific theme of the year. This year's themes were habitat loss, and art.
Students researched these topics and implemented dance steps into their school's dance. Props such as feather boas, pictures of body forms created by students in an art class at the Lillian Feinstein School at Sackett Street, brooms, litter, black capes, etc. donned the stage throughout the evening.
A group of students representing the best of all the schools involved also performed several dances. This group is known as Sleeque Feet. Sleeque Feet dancers have been meeting at Roger Williams Middle School in Providence Friday afternoons from 4:30 to 6 p.m. since January of this year. They made the commitment to strive to be the best. They displayed their talents well during the two performances.
Dance provides an excellent means to physical activity. In this day and age where 50% of all Rhode Islanders are considered to be overweight, physical activity is imperative. Dance offers the opportunity to elevate your heart and respiration rates, thus making it an excellent cardiovascular workout. Dance also offers many other positive attributes which may be read by scrolling down this page a little more.
Chance to Dance has room in the schedule at this time for new schools to join the program next year. If your school joins the Chance to Dance program, a Chance to Dance instructor will come to your school from approximately October to May, and offer your students a 45 minute dance class once a week. The students learn dance movements they will perform in two dances in May at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

This one is from Emily Lipsitz - Quidnessett School in North Kingstown, RI.
This class had the Greek period in art which led to this poem. Emily actually submitted 4.
Barbara from Greece believed in peace,
Barbara loved to dance in her robe of romance.
One day in the country of France,
Barbara saw a sign that said come join Chance to Dance.
Barbara joined and had a wonderful time,
She only had to pay a thin dime.
Barbara met friends and they all let out a roar,
Hooray, Hooray Chance to Dance is OK!!!!
Here is another one from Annie Conley at St. Mary's Bay View Academy, East Providence, RI.
Dance makes my soul sing with happiness
Amazing things happen!
Nobody can keep me away from dance!
Can you feel the magic in dance?
Everyone, everywhere should dance!!!!
